I ASKED FOR WONDER: Group Exhibition
I ASKED FOR WONDER: Group Exhibition
September 1 - 22
Opening Reception: Friday, September 1, 5 - 8pm
“I did not ask for success. I asked for wonder.” This quote by Abraham Joshua Heschel is the inspiration for the group exhibition, I Asked for Wonder. The artists in this group show — Anne Blair Brown, Christopher St. Leger, and Marissa Vogl — find wonder in the everyday, from often overlooked structures to a pot of purple flowers to the way leaves on a tree can appear to be a thousand different shades of green.
“My paintings create a space of comfort,” says St. Leger. “These places [that I paint] are so close and familiar and are where I can finally talk to myself and dream about what matters most. My work invites viewers to experience the work in the same way; to experience the freedom of solitude that I value so immensely and to see beauty in the visual and emotional qualities of place.”
Vogl’s abstract paintings are often sparked by something that delights her or moves her. “My natural response to visual inspiration can be so strong that I paint it without knowing but instead feeling,” she explains. “This is a meditative process that has become more focused over the years.”
Brown agrees that she is mindful about finding wonder and beauty in the seemingly common or ordinary. “I used to think I had to paint poppies in Tuscany to create beautiful art,” she says. “I now know that if you pay attention, beauty is waiting at your own door.”
