Meyer Vogl Gallery is excited to announce Susan Altman: A Retrospective, a solo exhibition spanning Charleston-based artist Susan Altman's 50-year painting career.
"This retrospective is my visual memoir," says Altman, explaining that the show tells her story with an honest voice and without fear of failure. "Allowing myself to be vulnerable, allowing myself to make mistakes with emotional credibility, is critical to my painting.""Susan Altman is a part of our DNA as a gallery," says Meyer Vogl Gallery Co-Owner and Director Katie Geer. "We've been through so much together — the death of her husband, who was the love of her life; her personal health battles. Making art has gotten her through it all."
The exhibition includes Altman's abstract images, gestural figure drawings, and much more — and it shows her courage to evolve with time. A refreshing collection of work, the show is filled with Altman's vivacious, undeniable energy and vigor for life.
Mentored and deeply influenced by William Halsey, Altman was encouraged to develop a free and creative statement. Says Altman, "Fear of failure contaminates the integrity of my work, so I try to focus on the joy of the process rather than the success of the image. Bold and decisive strokes convey a feeling of confidence in the viewer. Cautious tentative marks are a sign of fear and anxiety. That is what is conveyed to the viewer; my expressive images are created without rules or boundaries."
The opening celebration will be held on Friday, September 6th, during the Charleston Gallery Association's First Friday Art Walk from 5 - 8pm. The following morning, Altman will host an artist talk at the gallery on Saturday, September 7, from 10:30am - 12pm. The show will run from September 6 - 27.
